A wattage label does not tell you everything about a light’s brightness. When comparing products, separate light output from power consumption and consider how the light is directed.
A worked comparison
| Example lamp | Light output | Power |
|---|---|---|
| A | 800 lm | 8 W |
| B | 800 lm | 10 W |
Both examples state the same light output; A uses less power at the stated operating point. That does not establish identical beam shape, colour, glare or installed brightness. Compare those separately and check whether the figures describe the lamp or the complete fitting.
Compare like with like
Check whether the quoted lumen figure describes the lamp or the complete fitting. Compare the same type of figure where possible, then look at how the light is distributed. A concentrated spotlight and a broad light can feel very different even when their stated output is similar.
Avoid choosing quantity from wattage alone
For a room used for both work and relaxing, plan which areas need task light and which need general light. Separate controls can add flexibility. Room size alone is not enough for an exact quantity recommendation: surface finishes, mounting height, layout and the selected fitting also matter.
What the numbers mean
Lumens describe light output. Watts describe electrical power consumption. ENERGY STAR’s brightness guide recommends comparing lumens when choosing the amount of light you need.
Your comparison checklist
- Use the exact product’s stated lumen figure, if available.
- Record power consumption and any separate lamp.
- Compare distribution, colour and control requirements.
- Confirm the room layout before deciding quantities.
